PureSpectrum (PSPM:PK) - Creating Responsible Lighting for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gases
The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will primarily phase out incandescent bulbs by 2012. Many of these incandescent light bulbs will be replaced by compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s). As a result of this mandated phase-out of conventional incandescent light bulbs, electrical manufacturers are searching for a viable alternative for these light sources without losing many of the attractive features that are consistent with incandescent bulbs. CFL’s are the main choice of environmentalists because they require far less electrical power than incandescent bulbs. The reduced power consumption as required by a 26-watt CFL as compared to a 100-watt incandescent bulb if burned 6 hours a day will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 170 pounds per year.
Besides the obvious environmental benefits, there are also significant energy cost savings for investors. CFLs typically have a rated lifespan of between 6,000 and 15,000 hours, whereas incandescent lamps are usually manufactured to have a lifespan of 750 hours or 1,000 hours. For example, a household that invests $90 in changing 30 fixtures to CFL’s would save $440 to $1,500 over the five year life of the bulbs depending on the cost of electricity in a geographical location. Perhaps a much better way of calculating the cost savings would be to imagine a 12% discount on all your household energy bills for at least the foreseeable future.
For the most part, CFL bulbs are still powered by ballasts that utilize ancient technology by today’s standards. The prevalent technology found in CFL electronics was patented more than 25 years ago, and there has been very little progress made toward enhancing or improving the performance of the CFL bulb. As a result, consumers who appreciate the appeal of energy efficiency have been forced to suffer the performance limitations that go hand in hand with outdated technology.
Based in Savannah, Georgia, PureSpectrum, Inc. is engaged in the design, marketing and sale of energy efficient lighting applications. PureSpectrum’s patented and patent-pending applications encompass major breakthroughs in power conversion circuitry that solve many of the problems that are associated with conventional fluorescent lighting. PureSpectrum’s technologies enable enhanced functionality in ballast driven lighting applications that have not ever been possible before, including true dimming capability and high Power Factor for CFLs.
While fluorescent lighting is the near future for lighting, Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting systems have been widely recognized as the best future solution for both residential and commercial lighting applications. Until recently, LEDs were too expensive to use for most lighting applications because they’re built around advanced semiconductor material, but as the price of semiconductor devices has plummeted over the past decade, LEDs have become a more realistic lighting option for a wide range of situations. A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor device which converts electricity into light. LED’s are about a quarter inch in diameter and a single LED does not emit enough light to create a viable lighting solution in a stand-alone format. However, LED’s can be group together to create a powerful light source which offers many advantages over both incandescent bulbs as well as fluorescent lights. As a leader in lighting innovation, PureSpectrum recognizes the need to adapt its groundbreaking ballast circuitry for LED technology.
PureSpectrum currently owns 6 patents and 2 provisional patents. There are also another 8 patents pending which cover many virtues of the PureSpectrum technology. Unique to a small company, the sales organization is already in place and the dimmable CFL’s are UL and Energy Star certified. The company also has established relationships with U.S. as well as international manufacturers and distributors.
PureSpectrum remains focused on a belief that as a responsible society, energy efficient lighting will be instrumental in all people’s quest to preserve our natural resources. PureSpectrum will continue its corporate mission – to design and identify technologies and products that enable energy conservation and improved performance without increased cost or confusion for the consumer.
